Guard Rails
Guard rails allow kids to climb into and out of their beds on their own, giving them the feeling of freedom and confidence. However, they must be placed properly, making sure that there are no gaps or sagging occurs between the rails of the guard and bed frame. You might want to put an evening light on the ladder so that it can illuminate the ladder's climb and descent when your child awakes at night to use the bathroom, or if they are awakened by a storm to leave their room.
Another great security feature for bunk beds is a safety net which can be installed on the top of the bunk to stop children from falling off when they're asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children who may be more likely to sleep in the top bunk.
Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed structure and are not removed without the use of tools. The openings in the guardrails over the mattress foundation should not be larger than 3.5 inches to prevent entrapment and strangulation. Place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 in every opening in the uppermost guardrail member and over the mattress foundation. Then apply 33-lbf (147-N) force in a perpendicular direction to the plane of the larger end of the block, and sustain it for 1 minute.
It's also a good idea to teach youngsters not to hang anything on the guardrails or ladder such as belts, clothing and sports equipment.
